Worldwide PC shipments totaled 79.4 million units in the fourth quarter of 2020, a 10.7% increase from the fourth quarter of 2019, according to preliminary results by Gartner, Inc. For the year, PC shipments reached 275 million units in 2020, a 4.8% increase from 2019 and the highest growth in ten years.
While Gartner does not include Chromebook shipments in its traditional PC market results, the fourth quarter of 2020 was another remarkable period of growth for Chromebooks, with shipments increasing around 200% year over year to reach 11.7 million units. In 2020, Chromebook shipments increased over 80% to total nearly 30 million units, largely due to demand from the North American education market.

Q3 2020 and Q4 2020 confirmed the trend: Windows dropped further to 78.9% for Q3 and then 76.7% for Q4; macOS grew to 8.4% for Q3 and then fell back to 7.7% for Q4, while Chrome OS had 11.5% for Q3 and then 14.4% share for Q4. The Q4 results are particularly notable as the fourth quarter tends to be the biggest for PC shipments. While macOS widened its lead over Chrome OS in Q4 2019, Chrome OS came roaring back in Q4 2020.
Both Apple and Microsoft want to reverse the steady decline in PC shipments and see PC growth again. Both want to sell additional software and services to the Arm-based PC, though both platforms will be supporting x86 PCs for a long time.
Wikibon projects the growth of the Arm-based PC from 2024 to be extremely rapid, with the introduction of new PC products that are thinner, more powerful, with less heat, and support the Heterogeneous Compute architectures to support matrix workloads of all types, including virtual reality. At the same time, Wikibon projects that x86 PC shipments decline significantly.
FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Worldwide PC shipments totaled 89.8 million units in the fourth quarter of 2012 (4Q12), down 6.4% compared to the same quarter in 2011 and worse than the forecasted decline of 4.4%, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker. Although the quarter marked the beginning of a new stage in the PC industry with the launch of Windows 8, its impact did not quickly change recently sluggish PC demand, and the PC market continued to take a back seat to competing devices and sustained economic woes. As a result, the fourth quarter of 2012 marked the first time in more than five years that the PC market has seen a year-on-year decline during the holiday season.
Shipments of traditional PCs are forecast to decline 12.8% to 305.3 million units in 2022, while IDC expects tablet shipments will fall 6.8% to 156.8 million. The combined market for PCs and tablets will decline by 2.6% in 2023 before returning to growth in 2024, according to IDC.
IDC expects a growth in shipments post-2023, and that by 2026 total shipments will be around 477.7 million, including 269.3 million to consumers, 63.6 million to the enterprise sector, 75.9 million to the SMB sector, and 69 million to the public sector.
The worldwide shipments declined 15.3% year over year to 71.3 million units in the second quarter of 2022, according to data released by IDC in July. It was the second consecutive quarter of lower shipments following two years of growth. IDC noted that the decline was worse than expected as supply and logistics further deteriorated due to the lockdowns in China and persistent macroeconomic headwinds.
In May 2020, Gartner predicted a decline in all market segments for 2020 (from already declining market in 2019) due to COVID-19, predicting a decline by 13.6% for all devices, while "Work from Home Trend Saved PC Market from Collapse", with them only predicting to decline by 10.5% for PCs. However, in the end according to Gartner, PC shipments grew "10.7% in Fourth Quarter of 2020 and [...] reached 275 million units in 2020, a 4.8% increase from 2019 and the highest growth in ten years." Apple in 4th place for PCs had the largest growth in shipments for a company in Q4 of 31.3%, while "the fourth quarter of 2020 was another remarkable period of growth for Chromebooks, with shipments increasing around 200% year over year to reach 11.7 million units. In 2020, Chromebook shipments increased over 80% to total nearly 30 million units, largely due to demand from the North American education market."[12] Chromebooks sold more than Apple's Macs worldwide.
Worldwide shipments of personal computers declined almost 20% in the quarter from the same time last year, according to market research firm Gartner, which said it was the steepest decline since it began tracking the PC market in the mid-1990s. A disappointing back-to-school sales season for new computers also contributed to a fourth consecutive quarter of year-over-year decline, Gartner said.
Pricing and procurement challenges have greatly impacted deployment in 2022, resulting in forecasted deployment levels reaching their lowest point since 2019. However, a return to a steady state of supply in 2023 should put the solar market back on track. The Inflation Reduction Act is expected to bring about unprecedented growth in the industry. Over the next five years, the industry is expected to install nearly 200 GW of new solar capacity, more than doubling the amount of solar currently installed. The legislation provides key tax incentives and long-term certainty that will spark demand for solar and storage and accelerate the transition to renewable energy.
During the fourth quarter of 2019, global PC shipments totaled 70.6m units according to Gartner and this figure represents a 2.3 percent increase from the same period last year. For the full year though, 261.2m units were shipped and this shows a growth rate of 0.6 percent from 2018.
IDC reported that fourth quarter PC shipments came in at 71.8m units which represents 4.8 percent growth. Over the course of 2019, shipments came to 266.69m units, showing a 2.7 percent increase over 2018. 2ff7e9595c
