The Facegen Modeller is a 3-D modeling program that uses photographs of people to create photorealistic renderings. The program has three primary goals: to provide users with the ability to create realistic renderings of faces, to produce models quickly in order for designers and animators to use them in their work, and also to teach about facial anatomy. This software not only has face rendering capabilities but it can generate digital models from real-world photos for multiple purposes like animation or even video game development when used with other modeling software packages like Maya or 3DS Max. The Facegen Modeller was created by Edwin J. Fuh, a medical technology professional and 3D graphic enthusiast who helps his wife with her medical graphics business. When he approached her to create a realistic image of a specific baby she had in mind for an illustration, she was unable to do so. It is also built on top of the open source RIBBON SDK 2.0 which means it supports all commercially released versions of these applications. The Facegen Modeller has an interactive tutorial that walks new users through the creation of a realistic digital model of a face. Users are introduced to basic modeling techniques and the program’s facial analysis tools which can be used to correct certain facial characteristics. Other tutorials include one on how to create realistic skin texture maps using Photoshop, create 3D models of hands or eyes, and how to paint references or use photos as templates in order to speed up the process.
